The sound permeating the air made the scales on the back of my neck stand up. I knew this sound. Every Stryxian who had survived the Morr-ta war knew it, and it was not a harbinger of good things.

Both of my hearts raced at the sound of a high-pitched whine. I knew that sound, too. It was that of a large weapon being charged up. We had barely thrown our clothes on and donned our air masks when the whole floor began to shake. We were out of time.

Andi would not be able to keep up, so I swept her up into my arms. My wings helped propel us as I flew to the exit.

My teeth gritted. The air seemed to retract, like an indrawn breath. I barely had time to close my wings around us to form a semi-protective shell, when a powerful blast propelled us both out into what had once been the busiest streets of Laike City. The force of it smashed into my back. Had I not been holding Andi close, she would have been pulled away from me.

Even with the air mask, my breath was ripped from my body. Chunks of stone and metal sprayed from the exploded home we had just made camp in. I dragged in air but my respiration was out of sync. I could feel Andi’s heart racing beneath my hands and her chest struggling to take in air.

But there was no time for recovery. I dragged in a ragged, filthy lungful of air, extended my wings, and propelled us up, off the ground. Back when this city was destroyed in the war, many of the structures had been obliterated so thoroughly that a thick layer of dust had settled over everything. This blast unsettled all that dust, forming a thick brown cloud.

It was impossible to see through, but it also meant our enemy could not see us. Even their scanners were blind in this, with the hot blasts masking our heat signatures. I closed my eyes and flew through the dust cloud. Nothing fired at us, although I heard repeated blasts to the building we had just been in.

As I suspected, the scanners had not located us. Thank goodness for the air masks. Without them, we would have suffocated in tesecs. Andi’s face pressed against my neck, protecting her delicate skin from the grating dirt. She tucked her cradled body against mine and held me tight.

I beat my wings hard. We had so little time to get away and I was still struggling to breathe. I flew as if our lives depended on it—which they did. Dust gritted in my eyes and stung my face where my scales were small and not as thick. I just hoped that her air mask was still in place. I was not able to check to see if it had become dislodged.

The moment we escaped the dust cloud, I looked back over my shoulder. A massive plume swallowed up what was once Laike City. Whatever had attacked us was also enshrouded.
